CASE STUDY

From blue-sky ideation to a market-ready product

3-in-1 Kitchen

Transforming Play for Early Learning & Daily Routines (China Market)

Project Overview

During my time at Fisher-Price, our team focused on developing multi-function, grow-with-me preschool products tailored for the China market.
This 3-in-1 Kitchen Playset transforms from a
kitchen → sink → vanity, encouraging imaginative play while reinforcing healthy habits and daily routines.

Key Objectives

  • Create maximum play value within a single product (3-in-1 / grow-with-me)

  • Maintain Fisher-Price brand trust while meeting China market cost targets

  • Support early childhood development through role play and routine imitation

Concept Development & Market Strategy

At the time, our team actively brainstormed modular concepts such as “3-in-1,” “4-in-1,” and “Grow-With-Me” products to increase perceived value for parents while keeping manufacturing costs accessible.

We worked closely with local teams to explore the China preschool market, where parents place strong trust in the Fisher-Price brand but are highly sensitive to price and functionality.

User Testing & Play Lab Insights

Through Fisher-Price Play Labs, parents and preschool children were invited to interact with early mock-ups of the product.
Observing how children transitioned between play modes helped validate:

  • Ease of transformation

  • Engagement across different play scenarios

  • Parent perception of value and educational benefits

Control Drawings & Engineering Collaboration

Balancing play value, manufacturability and cost targets

During this stage, the design worked closely with engineering and costing teams to ensure the product met China market cost targets while maintaining Fisher-Price play value and brand quality.

  • Reduced part count to minimize tooling and molding costs

  • Simplified color breaks to improve production efficiency

  • Prioritized core play patterns while eliminating low-impact features

  • Ensured manufacturability for large-scale China production
